Set page and column breaks (2) Set page and column breaks (3) Set page and column breaks (4)

For print-based output, you can apply a page or column break to a paragraph or heading (through styles or local formatting). You can do this, for example, if you want the paragraph or heading to start at the top of the next page or column. Alternatively, you can insert a manual page break on an isolated line, independent of HTML elements.

When you work on a document in Print Layout view, you may see icons in the margins next to the text. These icons indicate where a paragraph has moved to another page or column because of a page or column break, or because of a widowed or orphaned control.

Use independent page breaks instead of styles

Placing a page break in a style may be the preferred method in many cases, but there may be times when you find it more useful to use an independent page break directly in the content file. For example, this may be the case when you need a page break after a paragraph and just before a heading, but only in some editions.

How to insert an independent page break

  1. Open the content file.
  2. Place the cursor on an empty line where you want to insert the page break. When you generate print-based output, the wrapping occurslaterthis insertion point.
  3. chooseInsert > Page Break🇧🇷 If your app resizes so you can't see the text, look for thePage breakSymbolSet page and column breaks (12).

A gray bar appears in the XML editor, which is also represented by a style bar on the left side of the XML editor. You can apply conditions to the break if you want it to be used in some outputs but not in others.

How to set a page or column break with a style

  1. Open the style sheet you want to change or create a new one.
  2. Do one of the following depending on whether you want to use the simplified view or the expanded view in the style sheet editor.

    • simplifiedThe simplified view shows styles in a grid view and is generally better for new users.

This view provides an easy way to apply properties to styles, with formatting options available through a toolbar and dialog boxes (similar to an interface like Microsoft Word). In some cases only the most common property options are available in simplified view (e.g. font, letter/word spacing, paragraph alignment/indentation, autonumber format, borders, background). One advantage of the simplified representation is that you can apply a property to multiple styles at the same time. You can also click a check box to hide properties in the editor so you can only see the styles.

    • ProgressiveThe advanced view shows styles in a tree structure and, despite its name, is suitable for authors of all skill levels.

(Video) Line Breaks, Page Breaks, and Column Breaks

For properties, you can switch between a grouped view and an alphabetical view. In the advanced view of the style sheet editor, you can edit more settings than are available in the simplified view. In addition, in the advanced view, you can view and apply settings for multiple media and media queries at the same time.

warningMedia can be used when you want to use one set of settings for online output types and another set of settings for print-based output types. For example, you can use standard media for your online editions and print media for your print editions. in theMiddleIn the style sheet editor drop-down menu, make sure the correct medium is selected before you begin. In the expanded view, you can open multiple media at the same time; All you have to do is look at the title at the top of the middle panel and make sure you're working in the right one. If you don't use stylesheet media for your different outputs, or if you want all media to have the same settings, just leave the media set as default and continue.Notice thattaxpayerremembers the last medium you used when working on the style sheet, so next time it may or may not be the medium you want to use.
