at chicks, doughy butt(also known asclogged vent) occurs when feces dries up in the chick's cloaca (its spoilsport) and the blockage prevents it from emptying. This is a critical situation for a chick and needs to be addressed immediately as it can be deadly.
By the time your bird is an adult layer, its ejection muscles are fairly well developed, and the orifice can expand considerably (big enough to get an egg through, right?). Adult hens therefore rarely (perhaps never!) suffer from wet buttocks. That being said, they can certainly foul the vent springs with loose droppings and that can be an issue on occasion. A little poop on the vent springs isn't a big deal; it happens from time to time and generally your hen will clean it up on her own.
But if your bird has a real case of vent drip, it's a sign something is wrong with his digestive tract and he may need your help.
¿Qué es vent gleet?
Vent Gleet (also known assewerage) occurs when a chickencloacaIt cooks. The most obvious symptom you'll see is a yellowish-white discharge from the vent area that's clinging to the springs on the back (gross, we know!). Your bird may also have a swollen abdomen and gas, feathers that appear less shiny than normal and, if female, a decrease in their usual frequency of egg laying. The vent area may also appear red, swollen, and smelly.
In late or advanced stages of Vent Glet cases, your bird's abdomen may feel tight, its vent may be very swollen, and its droppings may even contain blood.
How can I prevent gleet ventilation in my herd?
Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to prevent your herd from getting sick in the first place:
- Wait for the treats. The majority of your flock's diet should consist of a complete feed that contains all the nutrients your birds need. these kinds ofGroceries can be bought online.or at the local farm shop. Treats are often higher in carbohydrates and do not provide the complete nutrition chickens need for complete health.
- Make sure your diet is appropriate for the bird's age.Depending on the maturity of the bird, they may need themStarter feeder, developer or cover. Most feed manufacturers have a feeding schedule on the bag. It is generally recommended to offer starter feeds up to 10-12 weeks of age, then switch to developer feeds by around 20 weeks of age, followed by layer feed for laying hens and older.
- offer valueto help your birds digest their food. Chicks eating anything other than finely ground chick starter need itchicken cereal. Older birds needchicken groats, which has a slightly larger grain size.
- Supplement the water with antifungal and antibacterial products.great products likeClothingOregano Supplement for Birds, ÖAdditive additive Seabuck 7it can help keep your herd's digestive system healthy.
- give your flockProbioticsevery few weeks.
What causes a vent leak?
- pH imbalance.loscloacaThey are the last few inches of your chicken's digestive and reproductive tracts. If your chicken's body is too acidic or too alkaline, it can make them more prone to gleeting.
- fungal infection, including yeast.
- bacterial infection.Gleet, caused by bacterial infections, can last for weeks or months and be resistant to common treatments.
- stress or hormones.External stress and hormonal cycles, like humans, affect the entire body and affect the digestive system. In chickens, these factors can lead to gluttony.
- Protozoa or other parasites.Internal parasites can irritate the cloaca and cause aeration.
How can I treat chickens that have blood clots?
Vent gleet is a symptom, not a disease, so it may take some time to determine the exact cause of the problem. For a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan, we recommend that you consult a veterinarian. In the event of an advanced and more serious Vent Gloet, you should take your bird to a veterinarian immediately.
Here are some recommendations for treating less advanced and milder cases:
- Quarantine affected birdsfrom the rest of the herd during treatment. This protects the bird from curiously pecking conspecifics and protects the flock from potentially contagious causes of gluttony.
- Provide fresh water dailyUse of a dietary supplement and/or probiotic as mentioned above throughout the treatment period. Be sure to administer the supplements according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Always have both grits readyincage cupsor mixed with their food.
- Clean the ventilation area dailywith warm water and a mild detergent such as Dawn Dish Soap. Keep the bird warm while you dry it. You don't want to add the stress of the cold to an already stressed bird! Continue cleaning the vent for days until it disappears. In some cases it can take up to a week or more.
- Use an over-the-counter antifungal creamin the ventilation area after washing the bird every day.
- Shorten ventilation springscarefully and be careful not to cut too close to the skin to hurt the bird. It's usually safest to have two people do this: one to hold it still and the other to trim around the vent.
This is what a healthy fluffy butt should look like!
Every time you handle your bird, especially areas of droppings!, be sure to properly clean and sanitize your hands and change your clothes if necessary.
Any time you see feces stuck to your bird's feathers, you should remove it as soon as possible, even if it wasn't caused by an underlying infection. Sticky feces can irritate the skin or, worse, attract and invite insectsMiasis the fly attack. They don't want flies laying their eggs on their feathers or on their irritated skin!
If your bird's nose drops don't stop after two weeks, something more serious could be going on and you should contact an avian veterinarian immediately. Your vet will likely collect a stool sample and prescribe an oral antibiotic if the infection is thought to be bacterial. If you are unsure if there is a qualified veterinarian in your area, you can contact themAssociation of Avian VeterinariansWebsite to find the bird vet near you, or tryVeterinary telemedicinewith our friends at VetTriage.
FinallySure, Vent Gleet is gross and smelly, but in most cases, it's treatable. Your bird will appreciate the tender, loving care you offer in overcoming this problem. May all the birds in your flock have fluffy butts!
